Two Gallon Fermentation Crock or Onggi with Fig Leaf Design; Kraut Cabbage Sized Crock with Water Seal Airlock for Sauerkraut or Kimchi
$300.00
Details
This crock is truly giant! It holds two gallons, large enough for a big kraut cabbage!
The jar has a traditional water seal lid; just fill the shallow rim with water and your pickles will be protected by the resulting air lock from harmful molds and insects. The inverted lid also serves as a bowl. The set includes a two-part weight and a smaller round weight to hold the product beneath the brine regardless of how full the crock is. The lid is easily lifted by a circular handle that doubles as a foot.
I made it on the potter's wheel from clay in different shades of brown speckled stoneware clay. The leaves are the brown clay and the backdrop for the leaves is a band of muted brownish-black slip. I made the leaf pattern by stenciling two actual fig leaves on the side of the crock using actual leaves. The crock has a rustic, antique appearance with different shades of brown, a soft and warm black and a light speckle. The exterior has a very thin layer of glaze that gives it a varied surface that is slightly shiny. The inside of the crock, the inside of the lid and the weights are glazed with a thick, semi-gloss creamy white glaze.
The crock is twelve inches tall with the lid, and eleven inches tall without. It is nine inches in diameter at its widest part. The opening is four inches wide. The complete set weighs seventeen pounds. All measurements are approximate.
This set includes the jar, the lid, one round weight and two half circle weights.
It is made from 100% non-toxic, lead-free glaze and is dishwasher and microwave safe. Monitors vary in how the color is displayed and I have tried to describe the crock as accurately as possible; please message me if you have questions about the exact color. The black slip is not a dark jet black but a more warm muted color. I pack for shipping with reclaimed, previously used materials whenever possible.
Because this item is handmade there are small imperfections in the glaze that do not affect its function. One of the stenciled leaves has a small area near the stem where the black slip scuffed away during manufacturing.
