This decorative vase is an unusual piece of rare craftsmanship! I made it on the potter's wheel by assembling colored clay and then turning the piece to add abstraction to the design.
The process IS the decoration in my wheel thrown work. This traditional rounded jar is a difficult form to make and takes an elevated level of craftsmanship.
The clay used in this vase is natural colored stoneware with the addition of a porcelain body containing a black stain. The clay is assembled into a brick with a design incorporated longitudinally. This brick is cut into slices and formed into a cylinder. The clay cylinder is attached to the potter's wheel and spun into the vase form.
The neck is accented by a nontoxic matte black glaze and the interior is fully glazed and watertight. The exterior body is unglazed for a non-reflective surface.
