Moon Jar Vase for Ikebana, Flower Arranging and Decor Accent Container

Details

This round jar is perfect for flower arranging or an accent to your decor! I made this jar on the potter's wheel from recycled multicolored clay. The upper portion is glazed with a semi transparent, glossy white glaze. The lower portion is unglazed, so the distinct colors of the clay are visible. My handprints left from the glazing process are visible on both sides. The clay is reclaimed and is several shades of brown, cream and black. This jar is five inches tall and six and one half inches in diameter. It weighs two pounds seven ounces.

This piece has a unique colored clay accent insert on the upper portion. The accent is orange, black and white in a marbled or feathered pattern. The insert was added while the clay was wet and created an indent in the clay.

The moon jar is the epitome of the intersection of traditional aesthetic with the brash and experimental attitude of American potters. The moon jar, technically challenging and rooted in tradition, has become a canvas for the abstract expressionism that so fascinates me. The process IS the decoration in my wheel thrown work. This traditional rounded jar is a difficult form to make and takes an elevated level of craftsmanship. When newly formed and easily modified I press a small rectangular insert of colored liquid clay, called slip, into the form, distorting it and adding an element of asymmetry. The memory of the liquid slip and the delicate thrown soft clay persist throw the finishing and firing process.

All items made in my studio are 100% non-toxic, food safe and lead-free. They are dishwasher and microwave safe.

Because this item is handmade there are small imperfections in the glaze and body that do not affect its function.
